SIGMA’s first APS-C size mirrorless zoom lens offers a versatile full-frame equivalent zoom range of 27-75mm. This makes it ideal for a wide range of photo and video applications, including landscapes, portraits, street photography, architecture, and events. It also excels in macro-style close-up photography, thanks to its maximum magnification of 1:2.8:1, which allows a minimum focusing distance of just 12.1cm. The bright F2.8 aperture facilitates easier handheld low-light shooting and provides a shallow depth of field for high-impact results.

Autofocus is fast and exceptionally quiet, thanks to the stepping motor. This feature proves particularly useful when shooting video or capturing fast-moving subjects like children and animals. The lens is extremely small and lightweight, weighing less than 300g. It makes a perfect first interchangeable lens or a sub-lens for full-frame bodies, offering versatility for various shooting situations.

It maintains a wide F2.8 aperture throughout the entire zoom range, making it easy to achieve blurry backgrounds. This feature is perfect for shooting attractive portraits and close-ups. The bokeh is smooth and attractive, drawing focus to the in-focus subject without distraction.

The lens incorporates three high-precision glass-molded aspherical elements. By minimizing the total number of elements, SIGMA achieves superb optical quality without excessive weight. The use of in-camera aberration correction further eliminates optical imperfections such as distortion and vignetting. All of this is made possible by SIGMA’s latest optical design technology at their only production base in Aizu, where all SIGMA lenses are built.

The SIGMA 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary is remarkably compact and perfectly matches the portability of APS-C mirrorless camera bodies. This lens serves as an ideal workhorse for day-to-day use. It is currently the smallest and lightest lens in its class, with a maximum diameter of 65.4mm, a length of 74.5mm, and a weight of just 290g. Despite its small size, it maintains a constant F2.8 aperture.

SIGMA constructed the body from carefully selected materials to keep the lens as light as possible. The barrel is made from a polycarbonate called Thermally Stable Composite (TSC), which is sleek, robust, and has thermal conductivity close to that of aluminum. This ensures stable performance and good operability in changing temperatures. By incorporating metal in some of the internal structures, SIGMA was able to make the parts thinner and achieve higher rigidity, ensuring the lens stands up to frequent, heavy use.

Supports Various Shooting Situations

The SIGMA 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary features fast, near-silent autofocus, making it perfectly suited for a range of photographic applications. These include shooting in quiet environments, recording videos, and capturing fast-moving subjects. SIGMA achieved this by using a stepping motor as the AF actuator.

Due to its small size and lightweight design, the lens is flexible in situations that require high mobility. This includes handheld shooting, gimbal shooting, one-man operation video shooting, and vlogging. When combined with the “Pocketable Full-Frame” SIGMA fp, the total weight is only 712g. The lens can also be used as a sub-lens for full-frame cameras (in crop mode) to keep weight down.
